911 Roll Call: How Police Academy Training Translates into a High-Paying Crime Scene Management Career

Updated: Oct 9

Hey Bee, hey! Blogger Bee here with another Taste Of Honey. I am just returning from visiting some Bees in Michigan this week and helping them to prepare for the winter cluster project. During the winter months, Bees form a Winter Cluster to stay warm and active. We prepare during the summer months by storing a large amount of honey. As the fall begins, we get the hives arranged and organized.

Today, I am responding to an email inquiry we received in the hive from one of our Bees with mobility issues.

Bee Inquiry: Hey Blogger Bee, I am a wheelchair bound Bee. I haven’t always been in a wheelchair. I guess you could say I’m kind of a newbie. On January 17, 2019, my legs were part of the steel that was removed from around my body during a tragic car accident caused by a drunk driver. My children's father was not so lucky. He took his last drink on that day before getting behind the wheel of the car, and he took his last breath at the time of impact.

My career also died that day. You see, I was just weeks away from graduating at the Police Academy.

By the time I was released from the hospital, COVID-19 was in full effect, and most jobs were moving into remote roles. I guess you could say that was the only thing that somewhat worked in my favor. I took on a job as a dispatcher for the police department. But with the rising cost of living, making $53,000 a year is not a sustainable income. Not to mention, I am now working at the actual Police Department, and it's just not worth the commute. I want to stay in Law enforcement in some type of way if I can.  I have tried looking outside this industry, but I am greeted with concern when they see I am wheelchair bound. However, I did not receive any injuries to my brain, and I just wish people could see that. Can you ask Momma Bee if she can give me a Taste of Honey on how I can roll into another career that I could do besides being a dispatcher? What skills can I use to pay the bills, besides rolling into work to say 911 all day?

Taste Of Honey

Momma Bee: Buzz on over here, Blogger Bee, and bring me a jar to serve this dose of honey. Many times, people see being in a wheelchair as an intellectual disability. This is far from the truth. Going through a traumatic experience where this Bee has not only lost her legs but also lost the father of her children does not define the loss of intelligence. Instead, she now has lived experience that has forced this Bee to learn a whole new lifestyle. For those Bees who have been rolling out for a while, or maybe since birth, it only defines their ability to learn mobility without the same advantages that some of us have. It has also given them some advantages we don’t have. In the same way children are taught to walk as a natural part of growth, the rolling Bee has been taught how not to walk and still stay mobile. There is no need to settle for a menial salary. You can get to six figures just as fast as someone walking. Making six figures is a mindset to do better.

This Bee has been a dispatcher for over five years, and instead of looking at working inside the police department as a disadvantage, uses it to build your career and relationships that can be valued in your career move. Now let's talk about that career move and see how her training in the Police academy can start her new path.

Police Academy Skills → Digital Forensics Applications →  Crime Scene Management

Transferable Use: Securing digital evidence (computers, phones, cloud accounts) in the same way as physical scenes.

Example: Making sure devices aren’t tampered with, isolating them from networks to prevent remote wiping.

Evidence Handling

Transferable Use: Chain of custody is critical in digital forensics.

Example: Logging every time a hard drive or phone is accessed, keeping forensic images secure.

Observation & Attention to Detail

Transferable Use: Spotting patterns in logs, unusual file names, or metadata that others might overlook.

Example: Recognizing that a “deleted” file still leaves traces in unallocated space.

A Taste Of Honey

These are just a few of the skills she already has. With an online degree, she can upskill and increase her salary to over six figures within two years. There are several different roles you can move into. Being in a wheelchair has taken your IQ to a higher level. You have had to work your brain to learn things that most of us take for granted. Use that lived experience to elevate you. Who said you have to get out of your chair to elevate? Those same people who are doubting your intelligence will be the same ones you see on the elevator getting off a few floors before you. And when they ask you Do you need them to hold the elevator door for you. Just smile and  tell “ No thank you, I am going to be rolling out on a higher level.”     Momma Bee

Well, thank you, Momma Bee, for that sweet Taste Of Honey. I will also give this Bee a link to our Career Change Package so she can get started. Well, I am heading over to meet with some of our international Bees next week. Remember if you have questions you would like Momma Bee to answer, you can either post them in our group and hashtag #tasteofhoney or #bloggerbee, or send an email to the hive at heybee@jobbeeacademy.org , and I will be sure to grab you a Taste of Honey from Momma Bee.
