Bar-Bee's Transferable Skills for Career Reentry

Hey Bee, Hey!! Blogger Bee here, bringing you another Taste of Honey from Momma Bee. This week, I'm heading over to the North Plains to escort some of our Killer Bees to a productive and positive environment. This week, some of the Bees that have been previously incarcerated and are trying to get their life back on track. They are having a lot of problems answering the questions on applications that question if they have ever been incarcerated.

Also, some of our Bees in the North Plains spent extensive time battling incarceration and would like to know how and what skill sets they can bring from that experience into the workforce. The Bees know you are a Barbee and would like to know if you would give them a little taste of honey from your past.

 TASTE OF HONEY

The first thing you have to embrace is that you have a superpower. The biggest statement you can make is to hold your head up high. Walk with a strong wind under your feet. No one will even acknowledge you if your head is down. How will you be able to see where you need to go if you stay focused on the steps you were already forced to take?  It is an accomplishment that you have been able to walk away from incarceration. Now, let's buzz you into a new career. When you take a look at the jobs that Karen has posted, you will find only manual labor. That's because this system will stereotype you into believing that your value only lies in your physical strength after a felony. That is not the case. Not to mention if you were to do a deep dive on a lot of larger corporations and successful start-up companies, you will find that Karens brother, the Vice President of the company, actually has either been locked down with drugs or locked up on fraud charges, and now he runs a multi-million dollar organization. Some of your favorite places to eat are started by formerly incarcerated individuals. I have ran some very large corporations. In most cases the executives including the founders had no ideal that I previously spent a substantial amount of time on jail until later on down the line. I used it as a bragging right to define my strong skill set that contributed to the success of the company   Lets take a look at those skill sets and careers surrounded and defined by them.

Applying for entry-level jobs can help you get started in your career. You use it to just get some traction in the workforce. Not to stay stagnant. Your skill set is much stronger than an entry level. The only reason you start at entry level is to learn the law of the land. ( No Pun Intended)

Transferable skills you acquired in prison

Communication:

We learned how to respectfully communicate with people from various demographics. From the hardcore streets to correctional officers.

Marketing skills:

We marketed handmade products from poetry, drawings, handmade tampons to burritos made from soup. We made and sold them to a customer base that constantly changed.

Adaptability:

We adapted to an environment we had never been in overnight. One day we were free and the next day we adapted to living in cells and being transported in chains.

Strong problem-solving abilities:

Some of us managed entire households from behind bars. These are the very skill sets I used to run companies. Did I walk out the door of prison and into the door of management? No! I started at an entry level and displayed my skills loudly. So loud they could not be ignored. Remember no one can outwork you. You are an expert at being on time because you had no choice when you served time. You are more than likely the most creative person in the room. After all, you are the same person who made a grilled cheese sandwich by ironing your bread. You know how to market effectively because you sold things to survive that are not even on the market in the free world. Don’t underestimate your skills. Black On The Job has successfully curated hundreds of resumes to display the strong transferable skills of our BarBees.

Black on the Job is in the community because we are in the community.
