Shawna’s Story

Shawna picked up the phone on the wall and called her mom again to hear her 8-month-old baby’s voice. She still had $8.00 left on her prepaid phone card, and Shawna wanted to use every dime. She knew once she was released, she would never get that money back. After all the prompts went through on the phone call, her mother pressed five. In a voice of excitement, Shawna asked her mom to put her baby on the phone one last time. She was already in the release area. Shawna had been through this process at least three times before so she kind of had the timeframe from her cell to the release gate down to a science. But this time her mother refused to pass the phone to her baby. Instead, she sharply asked her if she had a plan this time? “Not really,” Shawna replied. She had a good relationship with her mom. Life hadn’t dealt Shawna all the bad cards that most of her cellmates had been dealt. Shawna just kept picking up the wrong cards.

“I plan on looking for a job as soon as I get out, Momma,” Shawna said confidently. She was sick of her dam self running in and out of life so much that she was no longer even sure if she knew how to walk anymore.”

Shawna had always been good with computers. Being tech-savvy, she was very good at spotting scams on the internet. Anytime anyone in the family questioned something on the internet, they would contact Shawna for advice. She would check it out and give them the thumbs up or down. She was the family's own private internet detective.  However, just as good as she was at spotting crime, she was even better at committing it.  Her mother had spent thousands of dollars on hiring the best attorneys for her daughter. She was fighting harder than Shawna to make sure she didn’t get a felony on her record. Her Attorney had warned her this last time that it was the last time he would be able to plead her down to Petty Theft, which was a misdemeanor.

Her next charge, no matter how small the theft, would be charged under the Petty Theft with a prior penal code, which is actually a felony that carries 2 years in State Prison.  Her mother told her that day on the phone, The only money I am spending on you is for a career consultation with a Black Career Development company. You have a unique skill set, and you need to use it for good. Shawna figured she would appease her mother and book the services. She knew there was no way that theft on a resume could help her get a job. She wanted to change her life, but because of her bad choices, she felt the ship had sailed for her to start a career. Her past was chasing her.

That was until she had her appointment with Black On The Job.

During her first appointment, the resume specialist asked Shawna several questions about things she knew how to do. Shawna figured she would be honest with the specialist so they would let her Mom know she had kept the appointment, but there was nothing they could do.

But to my surprise, a week later, I  received an email from Black On The Job with a copy of my  New resume. As I  started reading it, tears rolled down my face. I  didn’t even recognize this girl I  was reading about at first. I was invited to select an appointment time to go over my new resume and start my journey to a new life. A Free life.

I had made some bad choices in life. But I also learned during my Career Coaching session that I had some very good options. During my criminal career, I was constantly going online, getting certificates to learn more tricks of the trade. But it was all for the wrong reason. This time, this time, my train is on the right track.
